Mujeres con espadas (women carrying wooden swords), Carnaval in Michoacan, Mexico

The general “rule” for Carnaval in Michoacan is a role/gender inversion for men, acting as women (wearing dresses, wigs, tights, make-up), and playing the game of seduction with men, provoking lots of laugh in the crowd. In this village along the lake of Patzcuaro is seen an interesting modification of the rule: On that day, a group of women is carrying wooden swords, symbols of masculinity, and acting as the local police.
